  • Yes, When you cross the border, you can't take fresh potatoes. Depending on what time we cross, the stores can be closed. So we do keep canned potatoes up at the cabin. We strain and dry on paper towel, add to powdered fish batter then fry about 5 minutes per side in oil and top with parmesan cheese when done . It's very good. I have not tried any baked dishes with it yet, but this year will probably experiment a little. :-)

  • I've never been ice fishing but when camping I've taken fresh potatoes to grill, and sweet potatoes as well.

  • We just take a bag of potatoes when we are camping. We make baked, fried and mashed. They are delicious!

  • Not camping or fishing but at home, yes. They're perfect for homemade home-fries.

  • Actually i did not know canned potatoes existed until a few years ago when I was a t friends house .... I have yet to try them but I do keep them on hand now just in case I need them....and for camping I use fresh potatoes wrapped in foil and toss in the fire pit on a long metal skewer

  • I buy them for my husband. He loves canned potatoes. I don't get it because it is just as easy to make regular potatoes as it is canned. I buy both for camping too. I love to wash and wrap up potatoes and toss them by the fire pit and have baked potatoes.

  • Yep! We make "hobo dinners" with canned potatoes, canned carrots, hamburger wrapped in aluminum and cooked on the fire.
