Square Foot Gardening

What plants would be best for a Square Foot Garden? Anyone done this before, DH and I are buying our first home and I finally get to have a garden and this seemed like a good way to start out. I live in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan and am wondering what plants do well in the area.

  • Lettuce, tomatoes, peas, and herbs like basil and rosemary. Pretty much anything will work in a sfg, but if it's your first one, those are the easiest to grow. For root plants you need to plan for deeper planting spaces and a little more work to make sure they'll thrive. For the first time, those are more above ground concern than below.

  • Check out 5dollardinners.com - the lady that writes that square foot gardens and she frequently mentions a book she loves. She's in Ohio so it wouldn't be much different than for you. She's got tons of great info.
