What is black mucus from?

I've had a horrible sore throat that turned into a running nose, and now I've congestion that leaves me both coughing up and blowing mucus that has black stuff in it..I am not a smoker, never have been. Wondering if anyone has recommendations or if it's just part of being sick

  • Pollutants, dirt, dust or other things can cause black mucos. I have it after working in the garden and am sneezing from allergies.

  • Black could be indicative of blood or waste products.

Both blood and waste products could be caused by some form of infection...bacterial, viral, fungal, or inflammation leading to bleeding in the lung.

  • I forgot to say I would go see a doctor, just in case. Better safe then sorry.
