When did your child(ren) stop taking naps?

My almost 3 year old just refuses to take a nap most days. If he does take one then he is super hard to put down at bedtime. If he doesn't take a nap then he will go down really easy at bedtime. I added it up and since he takes forever to fall asleep at night, he actually gets the same amount of hours either way. He isn't cranky or anything without a nap. I just keep trying to get him to take one because he seems too young to give them up...but then again I hate fighting him to go to sleep at night too. I've tried moving around the time of day he takes a nap, but it doesn't make a difference. Does anyone else have a child that gave up naps this young?

  • My two gave their naps up at age 2. They naturally gave them up by playing quietly in their rooms during nap time. You could have a quiet time everyday instead of the nap.

  • Maybe no nap...but "quiet time" of 10-15 mins? My last son at home is 14 and I can still get him to lay down and take a nap....:) usually watching a boring old mom movie but hey.....I'll take what I can

  • Ok thanks! I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I remember taking naps in kindergarten and my little cousin still taking naps at 4 1/2...I know all kids are different and I guess I just still think of him as a baby :)

  • My son gave up naps at around 4 or 5. Probably earlier he was just quiet about things. He taught himself to read at 4 years old. I've busted him now at 7 years old reading books instead of sleeping at 10pm on a school night. My daughter is about 4 and hasn't taken a good, consistent nap for about a year now.

I remember nap time in kindergarten as well, but it was also a private kindergarten with a before/after school daycare option.
