Do your children call other adults by JUST their first name?

I encourage my DD (4-year-old) to address her teachers and other adults by the term Ms. or Mr. so-and-so (first name) -- Yet the other day a friend of mine's little girl said to me ...."Hey Jennifer". My DD always calls the other little girls mom -- Ms. Kim. I like it better that way -- what do you do?

  • They have to call them Ms/Mr First or Last name. They don't have a choice whether the adult they are speaking to likes it or not. But, in our circles calling an adult by their fist name is extremely rude.

  • Teachers, people we aren't that close to, and people who have a specific title (professor, doctor, etc). go by Mr./Mrs./Dr./Prof. (last name)....everyone else is first name.

  • When I introduced my kids to people I would ask them what they would prefer to be called. Some preferred Mrs. Smith, some Miss Jane, and others just their first name. I told the boys they should call adults Mr. or Mrs. and their last name, unless an adult corrected them and asked to be called by something else.

  • I hate being called Ms. Myfirstname. I find it really disrespectful rather than respectful as most adults think it is. Mostly it reminds me of an adult trying to scold me or talk down to me. So if a child called me Ms. Myfirstname, I would ask them not to. But I would do the same for an adult.

  • My kids have always addressed adults with the proper title. And, their friends refer to me as Ms. "such-n-such", as well.
