Do you think it is right?

for a boy's Dad to call him names and tell him that he is a sissy and the he needs to get a thicker skin and not things bother him or be so sensitive about things? Or do you feel it is verbal and emotional abuse?  Any ideas on how to approach Dad about this without him flying off the handle and yelling?(he has a short temper and does this quite a bit so have to walk on egg shells around him all the time and pick and choose my battles)

maiahlynn----it isn't the child talking to his Dad this way it is his Dad talking to the child this way

  • Defintely not the best way to parent. And will probably create some issues as he gets older. Cost of Couch Time/Therapy should be dads responsibility.

  • No! it is unacceptable in any circumstance to call a child names.

  • I don't consider it abuse, but I don't think it's right either. Yes, kids need to learn how to deal with things and not let things bother them, just like adults do, but there is no reason to call the kid names. He probably gets enough of that at school. Kids can be very cruel to one another. Parents should not be cruel.

  • Name calling in any circumstance is wrong. Dads can lead in a direction without making the boy feel wrong. My own husband was treated exactly like that by his father and even though I have been his best fan and adore him for over 30 years now, he still has insecurities and negative feelings of himself.

  • I think it is wrong and it is emotional abuse.

  • It could be considered emotional abuse -- which can have longer-lasting effects than physical abuse does. Words hurt.

  • Verbal abuse, pure and simple.

  • this is not ok.. there needs to be discipline/consequences for when the child talks to his dad this way.. first sit down with the kid & say you will not be allowed to talk to your dad this ay anymore & if you do ___ will happen. like grounding him
