Illinois, full afternoon sun. What is a good plant for window boxes?

I tried lobelia - they said they love sun...nope they died. I tried marigolds...nope. My front gets sun from 11 am til setting! so summers get really bad. I water regularly also! My inground plants up front do fine. (roses, lillies and daisys) I just can't get the window boxes! I even tried the expensive Miracle Grow with the water retention beads....
