Has anybody had their roof replaced by insurance?

Our roof the past couple of weeks has lost quite a few shingles thanks to storms. Everybody around us has had their roofs replaced by insurance in the past few years due to wind damage. We called the insurance company today and they are sending somebody out on Tuesday. We have never made a claim before so we aren't really sure what to expect. Any advice?

  • We did. We found a company that would take what the insurance offered and give us the co-pay as as a discount. So no out of pocket. They insurance company along with the contractor walked around on our roof for about 20 min and then the insurance guy gave to okay and the amount they would pay towards to replacement based on the contractors estimate. They may refer you to a contractor if you don't already have one.

  • same thing with an auto wreck. they will look at the damage and decide if it is needed and let you pick between several companies who will come out and take care of it.

  • This is my job :0). They will come out and assess damages and if you have a good company you could have the check the next day. No one really REQUIRES estimates anymore because the adjusters are pretty well trained in costs for your area. I have had many people get a check on the spot. Good luck....

  • Thank you. We do have a good company (USAA). We have just been pounded with storms in the past couple of weeks. At first it was a few shingles here and there but over the past few weeks a few shingles here and there have really started to add up. We didn't know if it would be covered or not. We have wind and hail coverage but it's not the whole roof and the roof is not leaking yet (knock on wood).

  • It's simple. A guy will come out and look at it. He ill either give you the amount right then or he will go back and call you later. You probably have a deductible so that will be subtracted from the amount allowed. You could be referred to a company to fix it or they may give you the option to pick your own. Anything above what they give is up to you to pay.

  • We did and although we got a few estimates, our insurance company also sent out their own company to do an estimate. They then sent us a check for what they came up with. It was plenty to do our roof and we ended up doing it ourselves and saving some money too.
