Should the mentally ill be exempt from the death penalty?

Say they raped, tortured and murdered a child but were found mentally ill. Should that keep them from being sentenced to death?

  • Sociopaths are considered mentally ill and yes, if they raped, tortured and murdered anyone, they should get the death penalty. Same deal with psychopaths.

They are the same character disorder

And mental illness should not prevent the death penalty.

  • Not usually. If a person is found to be so mentally challenged that they really don't know right from wrong then you really can't put them to death BUT I really think there are few people who are in that category that can function well enough to do the crime.

  • It's everyones tax dollars being spent to keep them fed and housed for life and it's a WASTE of time and resources to keep them alive.

If saving tax dollars is your motive then the way the system is set up, you should be in favor of LIP.

  • If it was a pre-meditated, planned murder then yes, regardless of mental state the person should get the death penalty.

  • No one should be put to death. The government isn't God and has no right to make that decision, mentally I'll or not.

  • Depends on what you mean by mentally ill.

Sociopaths are considered mentally ill and yes, if they raped, tortured and murdered anyone, they should get the death penalty. Same deal with psychopaths.

  • IhartU- my son doesn't understand consequences like people getting hurt most of the time. If he didn't "mean" to hurt someone, he doesn't understand why they got hurt. He has Asperger's Syndrome (autism) and he'll sometimes hurt his sisters "on accident".
But, if he raped, tortured, and murdered a child then he would still deserve the death penalty.
