  • My dd is mild aspergers and use to do this alot. She is 5.5 and has pretty much quit. Once in a while I will notice her putting a toy or something in her mouth. But nothing unusual..like paper anymore.

Be patient :) This too will pass :)

  • Look into getting her chewlery (http://www.nationalautismresources.com/chewelry.html). As she gets older and continues to need to chew, this habit will become more disgusting.  Also, you don't know what chemicals are in the cardboard.  Some may be toxic.

  • Is there a trigger for her chewing? Is it boredom/stress/overstimulation? Try to resolve it by addressing the cause first. If that doesn't work, replace the behavior with something more appropriate. Chewlery isn't a bad idea, especially for such a young age. Jerky might work too.
