What exactly is Asphyxiation?

On my dads death certificate it says Asphyxiation, drowning. Can drowning be a form of Asphyxiation?

  • Asphyxiation is anything that keeps you from breathing. You can asphyxiate on your own vomit- for instance.

  • being deprived of oxygen, unable to breath. perhaps water filled his lungs, and that caused the asphyxiation.
