  • Wet it down and put it in a plastic bag. Asbestos is a mechanical hazard not a chemical poison. If it floats through the air into your lungs you can have a problem. (Although some have suggested that if you don't smoke your chances of being affected are greatly reduced or even eliminated.) If you keep it out of the air by wetting it down you should be able to get it tested. BTW don't bother testing the glass. It is inert. I would be concerned with flaky stuff, not glass or ceramic tile.

  • Call the Realtor and tell them you can also have the city come out and inspect it either way get on the phone quickly.

  • Check the local council in your area, it should be possible to have it removed without costing you anything. Also check with the seller you bought the place from.

  • Asbestos comes in MANY forms, and yes in shingles. I wouldn't go near it without a haz mat respirator in place. Just one fiber inhaled can cause a nasty cancer that will kill you. Was there anything in the property disclosure about Asbestos? Did the Realtor who sold you the house know about this stuff?Did you get Title insurance on your loan? If you have to get this cleaned up by professionals and disposed of properly your looking at LOTS of $$. Did the former owners know this was in the yard? You have legit cause to file a title insurance claim for this not being told to you before closing or IN the closing paperwork.

  • Put a small sample in a plastic bag. Look up asbestos testing. You should be able to either drop it off at a local lab or mail it somewhere. It will cost 20-30 dollars, but you will know for sure.

We had asbestos in our ceiling. It wound up testing postive. We had to hire an environmental asbestos specialist to remove it and dispose of it properly.

  • I would perhaps look in your yellow pages for someone who deals with testing for asbestos. I would have them come out to your home and have them look at the debris that is lying around. You could also call the Realtor and perhaps get more information from them about what this material is? Try to keep yourself and the kiddos away from it until you know more about it.

  • If you have homeowners insurance, call them, you may have weather related damage and get a new roof. Don't know why there would be glass, though. If you rent, ask your landlord.
