DNA question for any one that know how to read a test

Just got test result in on my nephew and his supposed to be child. Since my nephew is in Iraq his mother took the DNA test instead. The result says 7.4% that there is any relation to "grandmother" and child. We were trying to figure out if we was reading it right. This does mean that the baby is not his?

  • well i have never read a test but if the baby was your grad child the test would most likely say 98 or 99 % . the fact that is says only 7.4 % means that your guys are very distant cousins. you should double check with a pro.

  • Hmm, that sounds a bit strange. I'd have thought the % would be close to 0 or close to 100, depending if he was the father or not, unless he's not but the real father is a relative???

  • It can get more complicated with grandparents rather then parents, but it appears to say that only 7.4 percent of the markers matched. A child gets about 50% of the DNA from each parent. They amount they might get from a grandparent would be expected to be around 25%. Your 7.4% seems pretty low, but I would wait for a doctor to be sure that there aren't other factors involved.

  • when my dds dad and i went to court he requestd a dna test our test came back saying it was a 99.9% chance that he was the father...that result is kinda werid you would think thier be a higher percent between grandma and ur nephew in indiana i know u at least need at 20% or higher or the "dad" can fight the test results..id deff take the test to a professional and have it read and explained......good luck and i hope everything turns out good for you
