What should we do about the oil companies and why?

Obama is once again demonizing the things that threaten him and oil is a biggie.
I get that the big bad oil companies don't really need the subsidies the government gives them anymore and I'm ok with them having some of it taken away but.... you do know if that happens, gas will go up further as well as anything made with oil. As with any business if you take away anything that previously added to their profit level it raises the cost to consumers. Maybe it's inevitable and just something we have to live with.
Touting clean green energy might sound good but what has it done for us in the past 30 yrs? It's negligible and it's more expensive than drilling for oil. Certainly won't save you any money. You can't make the thousands of things we use that are made with oil, with solar or battery power. We have to have oil.
So you might say we need this green stuff and we have to keep up with the Joneses or it will save money in the future (after we are dead? Maybe, maybe not) So, what is the real reason you demonize oil and oil companies? Why would you prefer to pay more for the so called new green technology that has its own dangers to the earth and the people on it if you care to research it. They too get lots of subsidies from the government that raise the price even more and add to our deficit.
What should we do? Why not just take away all subsidies period and see what takes off. If America wants it, it will be built and used and it will save everyone lots of money. Why should we waste money doing something if only a tiny percentage of people want it?

No, I sometimes talk about what we are going to have for dinner.  Oh...and this morning DD and I had a lengthy discussion about what we are going to do this summer.  I don't "ALWAYS" talk about anything.

  • Oil is a necessity and will be around whether the "go green" people want it or not. Its a nice thought thinking that we can save our planet by doing this or doing that, but oil is necessary for just about everything just like you stated. Our liberal friends don't care how much things cost or rising costs because if they can't afford it the government will take care of them anyway... right!

  • Why not just take away all subsidies period, AND lobbyists AND entitlements AND loopholes-

Either that or stop talking about issues and problems that few are willing to truly tackle because the solutions are too difficult-

  • and if OIL doesnt need them, WHY do they get them?

They get them because once upon a time they needed them (or thought they needed them)to incentivise drilling just as Solar, Battery and Wind ventures get subsidies now. they don't really need them now but we all know once the government starts something it's almost impossible to stop it, ie. entitlements, subsidies to business and individuals and tax time goodies.

  • The reason to subsidize originally was to encourage exploration when underwater drilling was far riskier, dry wells were common with then current exploration technologies and oil was $18 a barrel. The royalty waiver program was a Clinton era incentive. Both programs should be abolished and permits to drill should be vastly increased instead of being blocked by Obama's whacko EPA. The Gulf moratorium on new drilling should be lifted immediately and funding of Brazil drilling and Mexican drilling in the Gulf should never have been approved.
