  • I have a 8 yr old cousin who was diagnosed with Bipolar, not real sure all the symptoms (she lives about an hour away dont see her much) I know when she was 4 she got kicked out of 3 day care centers for huring other children she threw a chair at another little girl and she pushed a little boy off the slide and he hurt his arm. She would sometimes do things and not remember doing them.

  • My son is bipolar and even with early onset you are looking at past the preschool age. There are many great books out there dealing with bipolar children. The youngest age is around 6, but that is very rare.

  • The typical onset age for Bipolar disorder is 20. When someone is considerably younger, usually an attention disorder is the preferred diagnosis. In order to truly diagnose, a person must have at least one verified manic episode. Bipolar is, in simple terms, a cycling from low to high.

I am extremely questioning of any practitioner who diagnoses this any earlier than preteen age. It is very likely such a diagnosis is a mis-diagnosis. Many of the medications that are presecribed for bipolar are very harmful for the body, especially in long-term use clients. Always question someone who prescribed your young child serious medication. I have worked with many young adults who are permanantly damaged from such use.
Your child may be suffering from trauma, attachment issues, or stress.
    Consult with a child psychologist.

  • Generally Bipolar disorder is not diagnosed so early, and behaviors also associated with ADHD, Depression, food allergies or intolerances, or a childs reaction to overwhelm/change may look similiar to Bipolar disorder (extreme mood swings, rages, nightmares, easily distracted, poor memory, low frustration tolerance...) I would seek professional help (child psychologist or psychiatrist) before throwing around big labels or pursuing medication at this age!
