Thomas Jefferson Quote

"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered...I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."

  • I agree. Even Andrew Jackson had an issue with the 'national' bank. I don't understand why the gov't pays the Fed to print money. Why don't we print our own. The Fed is made up of several banks. It is a quasi-gov't bank kind of like Freddie and Fannie. They charge the gov't to print the money. They control the flow of currency. Why? Why have the citizenry allowed this to happen?

  • I do agree, but just know that this quote in its entirety is undocumented (but I've seen it around a lot). I'm pretty sure the "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies" or something very similar was in a letter Jefferson wrote, but I'm not sure about all the other lines without looking into it more. I just remember reading that parts of the quote don't have a known source. But, I do agree with the sentiment about greed and how much power the banks have now, and I believe that at least parts of the quote are genuine or very similar to Jefferson's writings.
