When do children start writing?

  • Kindergarten, or ages 5-6 is when kids finally have the small motor skills necessary to write clearly. Of course, some get this earlier, others later. When I taught kinder, it was great to see how much progress they made in just 10 months. They should have access to crayons and pencils by age 2-3, as soon as you know they won't eat them or poke their own eyes out. That helps develop those skills. Coloring also builds the muscle control.

    Now, if you're talking about writing in the broader sense, with being creative and thought provoking, that may never happen.
