How do you make homemade icing with no shortening?

I am looking to make vanilla

  • Powdered sugar and milk plus some vanilla extract is what I'd use. Never used shortenting in any frosting I've ever made.

  • USE BUTTER. omg... shortening is disgusting. I have never, and will never use it.

  • Cream cheese & butter, plus clear vanilla flavoring and plenty of powdered sugar.

  • * 1/3 cup butter
    * 1/4 teaspoon salt
    * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    * 1 pound (3 1/2 cups) sifted confectioners sugar (powdered sugar)
    * 3 to 4 tablespoons milk or light cream, or to make smooth and spreadable

    There are so many different variations though. I do not use shortening, it is disgusting.

  • oh I forgot to ask if I make it homemade can I also mix what I made with store bought icing? The reason I ask is cause I have some, but not enough and that is why I am looking for homemade to make my batch bigger

  • butter cream: butter, milk, powder sugar, vanilla. I dont have measurements but any basic cookbook will have the recipe.
