2 Bumps

There are twelve eggs in the carton. Three of the eggs are cracked. What Fraction of the eggs are Not cracked?

What is the answer and how did you come up with the answer? Why is the answer correct? How did you know?

My ds said the answer is 9/12, dh said 3/4 ( ? ) and I said 3/5. They both tell me I'm wrong and to prove it.

Help? lol

• 9/12 IS 3/4. You take the portion of eggs not cracked (9), out of the total number of eggs (12) to get 9/12, then reduce it to 3/4

• It's 3/4 which is the same as 9/12, just reduced. I have no idea how I know, it just is.

• 3/4

• 9/12 9 divided3=3 12divided3=4...so, 3/4

• yep.....9/12...which is equal to 3/4. So the actual answer would be 3/4...

To break down the 9/12, you have to find the common denominator...which is 3. 3 goes into 9 evenly & it goes into 12 evenly. So, you divide the 9 by 3...which is 3...then divide the 12 by 3....which is 4...so the answer is 3/4....

• It's 3/4.
9 out of the 12 eggs are not cracked. A common denominator of 9 and 12 is 3, so you divide 9 and 12 by 3, which is 3/4. When reducing a fraction, you find the best common denominator that will reduce the numbers furthest and divide both numbers by it.
