How old was your child when they got glasses?

My daughter will be 3 next month and when we took her to the doctor last summer he said she was near sighted but he didn't say anything about glasses. We were suppose to go back in 6 months for a check up but we lost our insurance and couldn't afford it. We now have insurance again and I am going to make the appointment but I wasn't sure what to expect this time. Will she have to have glasses now because she is near sighted or will they wait until she is old? Any advice would be great! :)

  • It depends on her eyes. They may have gotten better, or worse.

My older kids were both 7 when they got glasses. DD went through a big growth spurt and had to get a stronger prescription inside of 6 months. Her eyesight sucks. Their younger brother is 6 and beginning to show the signs of needing them.

  • My middle daughter got glasses at 18 months because she's severely near sighted (she's 8 1/2 now). She goes to a pediatric ophthalmologist.
A regular doctor can't prescribe glasses and she's too young to go to an optometrist. Your doctor should refer you to a specialist.

  • All three of our children wore glasses and all are near-sighted. I can't remember for sure how old they were, but I know they were in elementary school.

  • My oldest got glasses when she was 8 and middle girl did not need glasses. My youngest might need glasses but I forgot if near or far sighted and she is six and said she might out grow it so will wait till summer to see if right or wrong.
