What are your children's favorite books?

I am studying to be a special education teacher, and I have been advised that I should start building up my classroom library. I'll be hitting up library book sales and Goodwill a lot. I'd like some recommendations for some really great books to keep my eyes peeled for. What books do/did your children love and want to read over and over again? What books do/did YOU love reading to them?

  • Picture books: The Barefooted, Bad-Tempered Baby Brigade by Deborah Diesen and It's a Book by Lane Smith are two newer favorites (It's a Book can use a little censoring for kids, but easily done, and still great). Classic favorites are The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss's ABC's.

I've also always loved Shel Silverstein's poetry books--The Light in the Attic, Falling Up, etc.

Older kids: Beverly Cleary's Ramona series was always a favorite for me. My son has absolutely loved Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. And Zorgamazoo by Robert Paul Weston is really fun, especially good for reading aloud.

Check out the E.B. White Read Aloud Awards for some awesome ideas. :)
