Nosebleeds in a 23 month old

My 23 month old son has been getting terrible nose bleeds. We took him to the doctor and she ordered blood tests, but said that there is some irritation in his right nostril. She also said that if the blood work comes back normal and the nosebleeds don't stop she will recommend we go to an ENT to get the it cauterized.

I rather do this only as a last resort.  Do any of you mommies have experience effectively dealing with nosebleeds?  Any advice?

My kids get nosebleds occasionally and so does my df because of the dry air.
