Strep Throat AGAIN!

Today is my youngest birthday. The big 7! We had to cancel his party because he has strep throat again. He has had three positives in less than a year and has been symptomatic with negative cultures 4 times. Our very fantastic physician that we love has said they don't remove tonsils very often anymore. I don't wish surgery on my little guy, but he has missed almost 5 weeks of school this year and it is affecting his grades. IMO summer would be a better time to have them taken out. And I think this could help his allergies too. Has anyone else had a similar medical experience?

  • My kids get strep often too. Make sure you are replacing his toothbrush 48 hours after starting medication and wash EVERYTHING he might eat or drink out of, water bottles, bathroom cups, cups by his bed...everything. Also the rest of the family should be tested too because one of you may be a carrier and not know it and keep spreading it to him.

I will say that my nephew had his tonsils removed because he was getting strep all the time and now he still gets step, but as a skin infection called Impetigo. So he still gets it and it is still contagious. So getting his tonsils removed just changed the way the strep manifests in his body.

  • maybe you should have everyone in your home tested. Someone maybe be a carried of strep and that's why he is getting it so often. My nephew got his tonsils out last fall. He still gets strep throat and he also had in his anus.

  • Doctors do not remove tonsils unless a child has strep 6 times in 5 months. It does NOT help with allergies. My son and I both had our tonsils out and we both have horrible allergies. The ONLY reason my son's were removed was because his tonsils were huge and my son would stop breathing at night or else his would not have been removed. Hope he feels better soon.

  • I haven't, but my friend was just telling me about how she used to get strep all the time until her tonsils were removed. She had strep almost constantly for a YEAR! :/

  • They quit taking tonsils out for a reason, it usually doesn't help. I agree with above answers, especially the one about replacing tooth brush.
