Crash dieting - how quickly does starvation mode begin?

I know that if a person consumes a very low calorie diet the body's metabolism will slow down into starvation mode in order to hold on to body fat. But how long does it take before the metabolism goes into starvation mode? Days? A week? Longer? And if a person eats very low calories for a set number of days, but then has an occasional day of 2000 calories, will that prevent the person's metabolism from dropping?

  • I believe its just a matter of days. You have to maintain a certain metabolic rate for your body and when it drops to low your body immediately goes into starvation mode and anything you eat it stores as fat. So if you maintain that extremely low metabolic rate anything you consume will be stored as fat.

  • I'm assuming your trying to lose a few lbs in a short amount of time? Try a 7day full body cleanse. I lost 6lbs in a week

  • I would say roughly in about 3-4 days your body will start to hold on to fat instead of losing

  • Like these ladies have said, about 3 days. Once you've gone through your glycogen stores, your body starts catabolizing mean tissue. However, your metabolism slows within a few HOURS if you don't eat often enough. You should NEVER go below 1200 calories a day, and if you do, then you have a 2000 calorie day, your body will hold onto as much as possible as fat. You should try to eat 3 meals and two snacks a day, about 3 hours apart. This will get your metabolism revved up.

  • Dude what's with the vote down? A 7day body cleanse is way healthier than trying to starve yourself! Fiber, acidopholus, multi vitamins... as long as you only do it about every year or so it's a great way to remove built up toxins from your system.

  • you need to eat atleast 6 small meals a day to keep metabolisim up. it takes less than 72 hours for your body to start eating itsself from the inside out after going from being fed on a regular basis to getting nothing
