My poor minnows are starting to die off

We bought a fish tank for Easter and filled it with common bait minnows and they are starting to die. How can I help keep them alive longer?

We have a filter in the tank and have been feeding them twice a day, the water is clean but SO thinks they aren't getting enough air or something.

  • Is there a pump thing that blows oxygen into the water or is it just a standard bowl?

  • there is a filter that moves the water through the tank and acts like a waterfall pushing air in with the water.

  • There is probably a build up of bad bacteria in the tank from uneaten food and fish poop. It takes awhile for the good bacteria to build up enough to balance out the bad. What you need to do is partial water changes with treated water for a few days and see if that helps. How many minnows are in what size tank? You may have too many fish for the size tank and they are not getting enough oxygen.

  • Maybe your feeding to much.Multi kids put about six minnows in their fish tank in feb and 1 died right away but the rest of them are growing, and they only feed them about once a week.To tell the truth the water isn't too clean anymore either.

  • What kind of minnows are they? Some of those minnows are really hard to keep alive... some are really sensitive to water temperature and factors like that. One species of minnow that lives in the lake where our cottage is dies off collectively if the water temperature rises a few degrees after a heat wave. Do you know the species of minnow (several are commonly sold as bait.) Maybe if you can find a species you can look up their needs as far as water quality and temperature to see if there is some need that is not being met.
