Can anyone give me factual resorces?

I want to know more about Mennonites. This is a branch of Christianity I know NOTHING about. I've heard the name, but that's it. So I'm curious. But I hate to just do an internet search because I know how much crap there is out there, and I prefer to get truth.

If there are any Mennonites here, I would love some basics! If not, I'll take links if anyone knows of any that actually have facts rather than assumptions or falsities...

  • I don't know. I'm reading "Christianity for Dummies" and it talks about how the Mennonites came out of the Anabaptists... So now I'm curious about Mennonites...

  • Actually, only a few types are like the Amish. And even those aren't all the way like them.

Some Mennonites have computers and tv and other things, but, wear handmade dresses and "look" Amish. They drive cars.

Some look and act like those of us not Amish or Mennonite.

  • More like Amish lite. And there are different sects, too - some more strict than others. They have a seminary near here, and their website has some reading suggestions:

  • Thanks! I knew they weren't a main stream faith, and after seeing some of the crap people put out there as "fact" about my faith and others who aren't mainstream (and some which are) I'm to the point where I simply skip the search bar any more...

    I'll check those out!

  • Good luck! We see tons of Mennonites when visiting my inlaws in SC. They do drive, and many run food stores. The ones we've seen follow the tradition of men growing beards when they marry, and the women wear long dresses and some small head covering over their buns.

  • They tend to look like Amish with their dress.
My moms best friend in school was Mennonite and they didnt have luxuries and at age 16 she was pulled out of school to get married and continue their way of life.

Not sure if they are still that way now or if thats a certain branch...just know what my mom told me about her.

  • You can usually trust for factual information, but it appears PPs have given you much more reading material to help you. :)

  • I do my best to stay away from ReligiousTolerance as well, because again, I've seen a good bit of "mis-facts" or just plain wrong information on there... Especially when it comes to religions off the beaten path.
