What if Obama/his admin proposed taxing drivers by how many miles they drove?

Is this an idea you might support?

The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive.

The plan is a part of the administration's Transportation Opportunities Act, an undated draft of which was obtained this week by Transportation Weekly.

  • No, of course not. We already pay tax on the gas we put into our cars. We pay for the tags every year to keep our car registration current (that's a tax). Many of us pay property tax for the "privilege" of owning our car. We pay taxes to pay for road maintenence. How many more taxes do they think we can afford to pay?

If this group is idiotic enough to pass this into law, I will use a lot more leather and a lot less rubber.

  • No I wouldnt support that. What about independent truck drivers? Or companies who bring goods to and from>? If they are taxed more then itll raise prices even more then we are seeing.

  • That's their end run around the hybrid and electric car owners. They aren't making enough off them in gas tax anymore. Bad idea, but that just means they're more likely to push it.

  • Well, considering the average commute is 19 miles one way I would say that would really suck...and not help the job situation any at all.

  • no, i wouldn't support it. the thing is, i bet 'they' use up a lot more mileage/fuel/$$ flying to&fro than the average joe does in his car, even if he's just goofing off.
just another case of 'them' and 'little us'.

  • What about those of use who do things like mail delivery? I drive 140 miles a day, 6 days a week other than fed. holidays, and if DH has to sub his route, he drives 110 miles a day. He isn't an OTR trucker anymore but what about them? DH used to put on hundreds of miles a day. Yeah, if they try that, there will be hell.

  • I wouldn't support that at all.

  • They didn't...

    If they do..I'll respond

If you are mentally incapable of considering a hypothetical situation, why bother responding to questions about hypothetical situations in the first place?

  • I'd definitely be screwed :( My children's school isn't very close to me either (about 8 miles one way), so minimum of 32 miles a day, 4 days a week. This does not include me taking youngest to her school, which is slightly closer.

No, I will never support this!
