How do you justify patriotism?

A lot of the time, our country is asking us for support. They tell us that there is a problem with our country, or in the world, and they have a plan to fix it. There is no way for us to know for sure that what they are telling us is the truth, and at best, they are certainly not giving us the whole truth. If government were an open book, it would be vulnerable to overthrow. So oftentimes, we are asked to support our government on blind faith. Oftentimes, our support includes nodding at the killing of many! So how do you justify patriotism?

  • By questioning the government

  • I don't think that is what patriotism is.

Patriotism - to me - is loving and supporting your country. That is not always loving and supporting your government.

  • Patriotism needs no justification.

  • Justify? Why do I need to justify loving my country?

Answer by Carpy at 4:48 PM on May. 6, 2011

  • I agree, no need to justify.

But, I don't think you really understand what patriotism is. It is absolutely NOT blindly supporting the government. It's supporting the foundation this country was built upon, and questioning the government at every turn (no matter what party is in power).
