Lactation Consultant...

I was considering going through the training and becoming a certified lactation consultant. But I am concerned about the reality of actually finding a job in this field. Do you know anybody with this career? If so, did they have difficulty finding work? And do they make a decent living?

  • That answer is going to vary by geography. UC San Diego says that all its grads get good paying jobs...but your area may be a different story. Talk to the school you're considering and ask about placement rates. Check with the personnel departments of local hospitals to find out about demand.

  • One of my very best friends is a lactation consultant, she was working for the county health dept as a clerk at the time she went through all her training and schooling. They felt it was such a worthwhile position and there was a great need, that they created a job in the health dept for her. She has been there for about 12 years now and just loves it.

Look at hospitals, country health depts, city services as well. Many pediatricians employ lactation consultants as well.
