How do your children's friends refer to you? mrs. lastname? / mrs. s ?/ firstname?

my girls are getting to the age where their friends will be needing to call me something. when i was growing up my parents felt strongly about being referred to as mr. and mrs. i'm just not sure if i'd like them calling me by my first name. on the other hand, i feel "old" being referred to as mrs. any suggestions?

  • I've been called Miss Mandi. When the kids were little I encouraged them to call their friends' folks "miss/mr" as well.

  • Growing up we always had to address someone as Ms/Mr. first name or last name, but most of the time it was first name since we always heard our parents call them by their first name.
I teach my son this too and his friends will say Ms also and I do not feel old hearing this, since I have always known it to be a way of respect to address an adult.

  • I TOTALLY encourage my children to call ANY adult Ms./Mr.(has NOTHING to do with age) -- And yes, we are southern. My DD's bff however calls me "Jenn" -- I don't like it, but thats how her parents have taught her. It's funny when we are all together because my DD will say Ms. Kim and her DD just yells JENN!

  • I get called Angie mostly but my SIL and DIL call me Miss Angie. I told my kids that old people like my parents age pretty much view it as disrespectful to be addressed by their first names because that is how they are raised. If in doubt, ask the person how they would like to be addressed.
While I always try to give a person what they think of as respect in addressing them, It's unimportant to me as long as the actual respect is there.

  • We always referred to our friends' parents by their first name, unless they were teachers. Then it was Mr. or Mrs., same as in school.

Not being raised with "southern manners," I'd find it a bit off-putting to have my children be required to call someone Mr. or Mrs. if there was no reason.
