Anyone ever use a top box on their car?

We've got to move across the country and wanted to to make our drive a sort of family vacation to see the sights on the way. We'll be getting a moving van too, so this is just for what my family needs for a week or two on the journey (mid sized sedan; two kids).

So wer're thinking about getting a yakima style top box, but I'd love to get some insightsand recommendations before we put the money into getting the box and railings set up on our car.

  • Look on cragslist. That's where we bought ours. Make sure it is a hard one, not the soft ones that say they are water proof. Also, pack in duffle bags, it will allow more room since suitcases do have give. It worked really well for our family when we drove to TX.

  • We've used both a soft "bag" on top of the car (bought at WalMart) that is water resistant and we also have a X-Cargo hard box that is water proof. We definitely notice a "drag" on the car when we have the hard box on top, but didn't notice the same resistance with the bag. We use one of them every year for our week long vacations on either our stationwagon or minivan. There's 7 of us - we need the room!

  • I bought a "clam shell" that hooks onto the roof where the doors close with straps. No need to install permanent railings!
