  • If there are citizens asking the politicians to stop money going to a bored military at home at record numbers oh yes there will be cuts and less promotions it's all a matter of economics during peacetime.

Yeah, because civilians begging and screaming for things they wanted done or stopped has made the politicians take notice before, right? LOL

What makes you think they're bored at home? They're more likely to be bored over in theater then they are to be bored in garrison. Training, recertifications, requalifications, leadership courses, warfighting and tactical schools.... My husband's maybe home 8% of the time!

  • I have been in for 15 years and my husband has been in for 17. We both love what we do. They aren't ever going to be able to bring home ALL the troops. It just isn't going to happen.

  • It's his career but "just a job" to him. Even if they all come home there will still be jobs out there. We need guys all over the world not just in war zones. The economy will be fine.

  • My husband loves his job in the National Guard but, he is ready to be done. After a tour in Iraq and an attack on his vehicle in Afghanistan he is ready to be medically discharged. BUT, just because there are no public wars to be fought it doesn't mean that all of these servicemembers are going to be "laid off." They will continue to train and do their jobs around the world.

  • OP, DH is retired now, but we both loved his time in the military. Deployment time ~ not so much, but it is necessary. I know my son wouldn't choose any other path as well and his wife/the grandbabies support him. We both prefer military life.

I'm not sure why so many people believe that bringing the troops home means they all become unemployed. That isn't remotely true. Every single soldier has a stateside job, and that is what they come back to. The only 'downsizing' is through BRAC, and that is as much rearranging as it is downsizing. Soldiers have jobs with or without a war because 1)they are constantly training, 2)all of the equipment needs to be maintained regardless, and 3) the entire military ALWAYS has to be ready. Even if we brought home everyone that is deployed, the military will be standing ~ you just won't hear much about it.

Peacetime always ends. Always. Without a standing military, without a well trained and well supplied military, those citizens would cease to BE citizens. They would become conquered. I realize that many citizens resent what monies go towards the military. Too bad. Consider it as rent to live in a free nation where you have a right and the freedom to speak badly about the very people that stand between your 'rights' and losing them.

BlueCollarMama made several good points. Our troops ARE more likely to be bored when deployed because they do far more when at home ... and, yes, military families are WELL aware of how unimportant our loved ones are to some citizens. It's ok. Soldiers will stand up for your rights.

  • OP, why are you asking a question to military wives only, just to bash our husbands? You honestly think that it's ok to say their job is not important? You honestly think that when they get home from deployment, that they will be let go? It doesn't work that way! You can't compare being in the military to being a civilian. We are not like you. You can't sit on your ass while our husband defends it, then expect him to just be fired when he gets home. Isn't gonna happen. Never has. Yes, the military downsizes. NOT by cutting out an entire MOS. NOT because a job isn't needed. Get your head out of your ass. These soldiers work, they get ready for when they DO have to fight, when they DO have to defend. They can't just up and do it. And no, a bunch of civilians can't just complain about the military, and get it downsized because there are those that fight for our rights, the rights of the AD. Move on.

  • If they were to bring them ALL home we would have to have a massive troop reduction. We don't have enough CONUS jobs for them all. You can't just deploy to our borders either..it is against the law.
