Why is Charlie short for Charles if they are both the same number of letters?

  • It's more of a casual name than a nick name. My uncle's name was Charles but I called him Charlie and other kids called him Uncle Chuck.

  • It isnt really short as much as it is a nickname. My dd is Sara, we call her Cherry. My son is William we call him Billy. Most families and friends end up with some cute names or names they think are cute and it really isnt shortening anything.

  • I think it's just a more casual way of saying it. I would consider Chuck the short version.
