I have an older brother (now 36) who has major behavioral issues (violent and unpredictable). When he was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 17, he refused to get any type of help for himself; and since then it's been the same story. In ways I can empathize with my brother,I have been diagnosed with depression and ADHD and it hasn't been an easy road. A huge barrier to my brother getting the help he desperately needs is the STIGMA of mental illness, and that by getting help (meds, counseling, or both) means that he is crazy or that something is wrong with him. I believe that my parents did the best that they knew how to in dealing with my brother (while receiving little help or support from others), but I think that many times their help backfired and in turn they ended up enabling his behavior. As a mother, remember you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.
