How to make homeade vanilla extract?

  • yeah, but it takes a lot of vanilla beans & they are super duper least where i buy them they are.

    All you have to do is throw vanilla beabs in some alcohol, i use vodka,,,but some people like rum.

    i use about 12 vanilla beans for 1 liter of vodka. Just throw the beans in there & let them sit for about a month.

  • just an don't want to use an alcohol that overpowers the vanilla bean, that is why most people use vodka because it doesn't have much flavor of it's own & adopts the vanilla flavor real well.

    Also, it has to be at LEAST %40 alcohol...

  • You need "grade b" beans. I've found them on Amazon. Then you steep them in 70 proof alcohol (vanilla extract is 35% alcohol) for like a month.

  • Yep- Samurai chica hit it on the nose. Only change I'd make is that some people like to split the beans down the center before putting them in there. I found this method and find it's pretty good. You can also give this as a gift to someone you know that loves to cook or is a foodie- just put it in a nice jar when you go to make it.
