How do I get my 4 year old to stop bitting his nails?

He started doing this when he was in the hospital last year. He was hospitalized after being bitten by my cousin's dog. The bite became infected.

  • Every time you catch him biting his nails (probably a nervous habit) gently, calmly and quietly remove his hands from his mouth.

  • He was frightened and traumatized by the dog bite and hospital stay. Give him as much extra attention as you can--hugs, kisses, read to him in a rocking chair, reassure him if he is anxious. Also spend time doing things with him lke coloring, puzzles, tearing up newpaper, bouncing balls back and forth. The more he is busy USING his hands the less time/inclination he will have to bite the nails. Just love him a lot and make him feel extra secure. He'll get over it.

  • There is something at Sally's just for this. It makes your nails taste terrible if you bite them.
