This is such a dumb question but i want to get it right so i dont look so..well...

my son is 5 yrs i was told by his doc yes he has a slight med. condition but can start school in sep. so my silly question is... kindergarden or pre school? please dont bash. i feel stupid as is...

  • Kindergarten because he is 5...if he was under 5 it would be preschool. Not a dumb question! :)

  • There isn't any reason to feel stupid. You don't know, so you asked.

    I would say kindergarten. Preschool is usually 3 - 4 yr olds. If he's already 5, then he will be turning 6 shortly after the start of the school year, which is already going to make him one of the older kids in his class. NOT a bad thing really, especially when you're talking he's 6 and most of them are 5, or 5 going to turn 6 (both of mine turned 6 in kindergarten - one was born in January and the other in April), but for various reasons I don't think you would want him to be turning 7 at the start of kindergarten.

    If you're concerned that he might not be ready for kindergarten, you can work with him over the summer :-) Play groups can help with the separation aspects, and counting games, abc games, etc can help with the developmental stuff :-)

    now, if his med. condition is the issue, I would strongly suggest asking the Dr which he meant :-)
