They do calculations based on the length of your babies bones and the length of the average baby's bones. These calculations are more accurate during early pregnancies when all babies are pretty much the same growth rate and less accurate later as the individual's size varies more. Ask the technician or doctor what the standard deviation is on his/her measurements. If I remember correctly at 10-12 weeks it is accurate within 5 days.
