what causes hiccups?

My son had hiccups like 5 times a day in the womb - he is 13 months now and gets hiccups like 3 times a day sometimes or more- usually after eating - anyone know what causes hiccups?

  • Eating or drinking too quickly gives some people hiccups. Sometimes spicy food, very hot food, or very cold food causes hiccups.

  • Hiccups are caused by eating too quickly. Your digestive system acts in a continuous "wave." When the wave rhythm is disrupted (ie: eating too quickly, swallowing too much at one time), then hiccups result.
