How old was your child when they started brushing their teeth without your assistance?

My daughter will be 3 in August and I still have to brush her teeth because when I try to get her to do it herself she chews on the toothbrush. lol. So I was just wondering...

  • We had some issues with DS brushing his teeth on his own. His dentist told us that we need to assist him until he can write in cursive writing. He's 7 and I still check his teeth every night!

  • Our dentist told us that we needed to wait until our son could tie his own shoes. They don't use cursive here anymore :(

  • My 6 and 5 year old do it on their own but I make them show me their teeth when they're done - a couple times my 5 year old tried getting away with just telling me she did it, I told her to open her mouth and I could tell she didn't because I couldn't smell the toothpaste. I still help out with my 3 year old boys.

  • letlovegrow - No, my daughter doesn't spit it out either. We use the training toothpaste and she tries to suck it off the toothbrush while brushing. lol.
