3yr/old suddenly became afraid of going outside.. & of the dark evn if we hve nightlights on the room.

My 3 year old is outgoing and loved the outside.
Suddenly he became afraid of going outside, he cry's if we try to and tell us no, whenever I want to take him outside to play, even when we are going to the car to go somewhere he will stay by the door and refuses to go, unless we are going to his grandma house then he will run to the car. He used to love going to the park since he was a baby, and play in the sand and everything, he used to try to escape outside. He also closes our windows when he notice they are open.
Also afraid to be in the dark. we have nightlights on the kids room, B UT he has to have full light on otherwise he will turned them on himself or goes to whenever there is light and falls asleep, we have found in on the hallway couple times because we live that light on sometimes and living room light also lights up the hallway.

We've been worried about this, because he never had a problem with dark or being outside and it has been going on for over a month now.

Has anyone experience this with their kids?

  • It is probably because of something he saw on TV. Ask him what in particular he is frightened of. My Son was scared of the dark for about a week or two after Halloween when he was that age because of all the spooky cartoons on TV. Ask him, he will tell you! Then explain that it's only make believe & that it's just silly! Then make a silly joke like the boogy man farts when he gets scared. Make it a joke so he laughs.

  • I should probably also mention, He has been scare of noises, Loud noises from outside. Regular Car noises he is fine with, but if cars made a weird noise he would cover his little head with his hand and any other loud noise he has to cover his little head, some of them are like the Church Bell, he has done this since he was a baby.

  • Well, about this age it is perfectly normal for them to start being afraid of the dark, and boogie monsters, even if they never were before.

  • This is unusual. SOMETHING has happened for such a dramatic change to be seen. I would suggest taking him to a good child play therapist if you are able to to try to find out what is going on. If you can't see someone, love him, reassure him, let him overcome his fears gradually, talk to him, look at what he draws for clues, and do your best not to push him into things or frighten him further.
