Why would a ultrasound be done to check for position of the placenta?

My SIL is going in to have an ultrasound done to see the position of her placenta. She is dialated to a 4 and 80 percent effaced. She is doing chord blood and is only 37 weeks. She didn't ask why they were looking at the position of the placenta, but we are all curious as to why. Anyone have this done before? Do you know the reasoning behind it?

  • they check to make sure it's where it should be, which isn't too close or covering the cervix.

  • they are probably wanting to make sure that the placenta isn't blocking the cervix at all, its dangerous if the placenta comes out before the baby does (its called placenta previa) if it is blocking or partially blocking then they will want to do a c-section

  • I had three ultra sounds done for just this reason. It's not good if the placenta is in the way of baby coming out. Luckily mine moved out of the way and my doctor is happy now. Not 100% sure what it can do to baby but I no it's not good. Good luck

  • To rule out previa or abrupta. They need to know where that placenta is come birth-time, because it can be too dangerous to deliver vaginally if the placenta is not far enough from the cervix.

My guess is that they have been monitoring your SIL throughout the preg.

  • There can be many complications depending on the location of the placenta. It can be low lying or even covering the cervix which can be very dangerous. Maybe they had an idea that it was not in the correct position. Also if she is not feeling the baby move as much it can be a sign that the placenta is in the front.

  • if it's not in the right place, there can be all kinds of problems....

If she is 37 weeks though, all should be good.

  • No, but she has very quick labors. She 2 other children. She is having the Chord blood saved for her Daughter who has leukemia. Would that have anything to do with it? No issue of placenta previa or anything like that.

  • I wonder if, because the importance of getting that chord blood, they want to get an idea of where the structures are, so they know what they are dealing with.

Good luck, and prayers for the healing of your niece.

  • Oh! We figured it out, lol. She is a bleeder as well during labor and delivery so they want to make sure that the placenta is not too far down and there won't be any bleeding problems. Thanks everyone for your help!!
