When is it okay to let babies sleep on their stomachs?

My little boy is 5 months old. When I put him to bed, I put him down on his back, but lately at night he has been rolling onto his stomach while he is sleeping. I always roll him back over, but after a little while, he's on his stomach again. At what age is it okay to just let him stay on his stomach? He can hold his head up very well, there is absolutely nothing in his crib, and his mattress is very firm.

  • if he's rolling to his stomach it's OK.

my pedi told me a little "test" that you can do to make yourself feel more comfortable about it if you want. while he is sleeping on his belly, gently tickle his cheek (with like a feather or something) if he can lift his head and turn away from it, he's safe and will be able to turn his head if he needs to while he is sleeping.

  • Once your baby is able to roll oevr llike that, it's safe. Once he can do the things you describe, he is strong enough to protect himself and find a safe position on his own. Besides, there's really not much you can do about it unless you want to stand next to his crib all night rolling him over again and again. :-)
