Why does Rita's and Dairy Queen close down for the winter?

Everyone I know loves water ice and ice cream and would eat it all year if we could. So why do these places close down for the winter?

  • There are three Dairy Queens where I live and one closes for the season. It closes because they do not have a full kitchen, so they have very limited hot food. It is not cost effective to stay open in the winter for them. The other two have a full menu and stay open.

  • The Dairy Queen here shuts down through the winter because they only have outdoor seating.

  • I live in WA State and while (VERY unfortunately) we don't have Ritas around here, our DQ is also open all year.

  • Never heard of Rita's. DQ is open year-round here, in the midwest.
