What is an appropriate amount to give a graduate?

A second cousin and the daughter and son of a close friend are graduating from high school and college. I'm unemployed but want to send them a check to congratulate them. Don't want to be too cheap or too extravagant because of my limited resources. What do you think would be the right amount given these circumstances?

  • Honestly, a check for $25 is good if you are unemployed.

  • Given the circumstances I would send a card and an ice cream or coffee gift certificate. Its not about the money or gift. Its really about the card that matters you know?

  • I wouldnt worry about sending too much. If you cant afford anything I wouldnt worry about it. But if you can afford a little i'd send maybe $20. What you write in the card is what matters. I would write something really nice in the card.

  • You know....when I graduated I didn't expect anything from anyone. Just the fact that they wished me well was enough. But I think $20-$25 should be fine. If they are graduating high school it might be neat to give them a roll of quarters for doing laundry. Last year when a friend of the family graduated high school I bought a laundry basket and put laundry soap, fabric softner, and a roll of quarters in there along with some snacks. You could do the same and leave out the roll of quarters and have it still be a cool gift that they can use in college.
