  • It much depends on the location and length of the cut as well as it's depth. If you're unsure, go to the ER.

  • If you cant get it to stop bleeding, or if you stop it & it keeps starting back up, then you prob. need stiches. If you dont want to incur the cost of a trip to the ER or the fact that you will waste hours of your time there, you might want to try butterfly bandages & gause to wrap it. Either way- OUCH! GL!

  • If it's more than 1/2" long, and/or more than 1/2" deep, you need stitches. If you're bleeding excessively, or can't get it to stop bleeding in under 20 minutes, go to the ER... That does NOT mean that if you are bleeding excessively AND can't get it to stop... If you're bleeding excessively, you can't wait 20 minutes to make the decision.

  • Also if it is gaping that is another time they might give you stitches or glue it shut. My advice is head to a store and by the liquid bandaid and clean out the cut and then seal it up and you should to go.

  • Generally the criteria is deeper than 1/4 inch, over ¾ of an inch long - all depending on location.

DO NOT use liquid band-aid!!!! It is NOT the same as the surgical glue they use in place of stitches!!! and it will hurt like hell!!

Clean only with soap and water... or irrigate with saline!!! You can close it yourself with steri strips, making sure the edges line up, no over-lapping or gaping. BUT, if you don't know what your doing with them go to the ER. ( I am a sports medicine professional and I treat this all the time)
