  • You really need to talk to a financial planner who can ask you all the important questions that will lead up to that magical number for you. I know that for my husband and I, to live nicely at retirement in our paid off home while we drive our paid for cars.....the magical number is supposed to be 1.2 million dollars. That is assuming that we both live 20 years beyond retirement and not having Social Security (because it probably won't be around then).

  • slw123 - I'm wanting to retire in January and we don't have anywhere close to that amount and we plan on social security. I might need to go secure a place under a bridge somewhere.....
