Question about custody regarding an unmarried mother

What kind of custody is it where I have physical custody of the child, but the father gets to have a say in major decisions in her life (such as schooling, religion, etc)? With this type of custody arrangement, does the father get a say in how the child's daily schedule is played out?

  • Sole physical custody with joint legal custody. When the child is in your care, it's your schedule. He doesn't have a say in bedtime or dinner time, if that's what you mean.

  • Ok, here's the deal. What you are talking about is Joint legal custody with the mother having primary physical custody. What many people do not understand is with joint legal, you have to CONSULT with the father. This does NOT mean that the two of you have to agree. You have to at least discuss it with him, hear his view points, but you do not have to do as he says or wants.
As for as how the daily schedule goes, he really does not have a say, but it is nice if you are able to keep similar routines in both place. I understand where that isn't always reasonable, but it is a nice goal to try to have.

  • custody itself only refers to where the child resides... in joint custody most times the schedules for the child are soley based on who has custody at the time and religion is a joint decision, in sole custody only one parent has a say in what happens with the child..

  • Joint custody? Make sure everything is said clearly and you understand every single detail.
