What kind of large yard toys do you have in your backyard for the kids? And what do you use for the ground cover?

I'm soo excited! Were planning on making a play area for the kids in the back yard.
We already have some large toys such as a climber and slide, small playhouse, tug boat sandbox..still building on that. What kind of things do you have that your children just love?
Were using old railroad tides (is that how you sp it?) to section off an area and then we need to fill it ..was thinking mulch because it would be the cheapest. If you use a mulch, what kind have you found to be the best to use for this sort of thing?
Or is there a different ground cover that would be better?

  • We're getting an above ground pool, that will be the only thing in our yard.

  • We have a large swing set/play house. We are going to get rubber mulch to put down when we move this fall. It's better than regular mulch because it doesn't degrade. It's more expensive at first, but regular mulch will rot and you will have to put new on each year.

  • Rubber faux mulch. It's not cheap, but it will not hurt the kids if the fall in it (they will get splinters from mulch, I've pulled more than a few of those out over the years), it does not need to be replaced either. If it becomes soiled, you can literally wash and replace it. It does not harbor mold, it does not harbor moisture... It's great stuff.

The other thing you could consider is looking for a 'Stall Mat'. It's a high density rubber mat that is used on the bottom of horse stalls- it looks like the rubber mats that you'd see under a play place.

  • We don't have any large play stuff, but if we did we would most likely do mulch.

  • Rubber mulch is nice but expensive. We just did regular mulch with railroad ties. We also sectioned off an area for a sand box that gets covered every night. We have a swing set and a little tree house play set thing and we are looking for a little princess house thing this summer too.

  • We just have a grass backyard with a play fort/swing set/slide combo. There's a sandbox underneath (the turtle kind).
As far as yard toys, we haev a small swimming pool, some cars they ride around in, balls, etc. DS would rather be creative and play with things like a tennis racket and a jump
