How do we get these kittens to trust us?

We got two kittens today. They are 7 or 8 weeks old and they are so sweet. However, their former owners were not very nice. These poor kittens are not mean, but everytime we make a move toward them they cower. What can we do to make them feel more at home and feel more comfortable? Thanks.

  • Keep them on one room ~ with a door they can't shinny under. Make it a room that you (adult only) can spend some time in. Feed them there. Let them watch you there. Talk to them. When they are fat and full, pick them up and hold them. For at least an hour. Pet them. Talk quietly to them. Pet them some more. Try and do this everyday (but it usually only takes one time). If they struggle, scruff them to hold them the same way mama would. Keep in mind that they are limber little things and can scratch you with their hind legs even when you scruff them ... best to scruff them AND keep their feet on your lap!!

I've tamed feral (truly feral ... buzzing around the room, up the wall, hissing, spitting, scared to death of human contact feral) kittens this way. A little time, a little patience, expect some back sliding occasionally ... but if they are consistently well treated now they will forget the bad beginning. GL!!

  • Try to tempt them to you. When they let you, just hold them, cuddle them, love them. Speak softly and reassuringly. PLay with them if they will let you (A flashlight in a dark room or an old shoestring will work wonders)
